He started his professional swimming career at the age of 16 and he made the Connecticut HS Coaches Association Swimmer of the Year in 2016 & 2017. During Smith’s freshman year he earned first-team All-American honors in 2018-2019.
At the 2021 US Open Water Championships, Smith placed 7th in the Men’s 5K and 10th in the 10k. At the 2021 US Olympic Swimming Trials, Smith won both the 400m and 200m freestyle, qualifying for the Olympic Games. He posted new lifetime bests of 3:44.89 in the 400m freestyle and 1:45.29 in the 200m freestyle.
