San Jose Earthquakes (SJE) finished its previous MLS season at 10th position in Western Conference and twenty-one position in overall performance. On April 18, 2022, the Earthquakes and Matias Almeyda agreed to part ways with Alex Covelo, the head coach of the newly established San Jose Earthquakes II side, stepping in as his interim replacement.
Covelo was joined by an assistant coaching staff consisting of former San Jose player Chris Wondolowski, former assistant manager and interim manager Steve Ralston, and Earthquakes II assistant Luciano Fusco.
