Max Scherzer was born on July 27, 1984, and raised in the St. Louis suburb of Chesterfield, Missouri. From an early age, he was interested in baseball and grew up a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
At Parkway Central High School, he was playing and practicing baseball and basketball. At that time, Marty Maier was the Cardinals’ scouting director, he selected him but he did not sign. Later he attended the University of Missouri in Columbia.
