He was born on 12th September 1989 in Fountain Valley, California. His parents had come from Ontario, Canada. At the age of six, Freeman was interested in playing baseball and practiced with Little League. He went to El Modena High School and played as a third baseman and pitcher where he hit for a .417 batting average and had a 6–1 win-loss record as a pitcher.
At the 2007 MLB draft, he was picked by the Atlanta Braves in the 2nd round with the 78th overall selection for $409,500, forgoing his college scholarship.
His first debut game in MLB agaist Florida Marlins was on 5th September 2010. During the 2011 MLB season, he was named NL rookie of the July month and he finished that season batting .282 with 32 doubles, 21 home runs, and 76 RBI in 157 games played.
